As Roligheten and Dale continue to hone their collective voice, Mystery Orchestra with Grenager & Tafjord represents further compositional growth for these two young players, and a rare capacity for retaining the near-naked intimacy of a duo, even in the more expansive context of a quartet that brings its own definition to the term “chamber jazz.”

Multiple Norwegian Grammy Winner, jazz pianist Vigleik Storaas, has through several recordings established himself as a master of any jazz setting, from the intimate duo setting, up to the fat sound of the big band. Inner Ear is proud to be the first record company however, to present Storaas within a ”medium-sized-orchestra”, with the release of Open Ears. This recording reveals the long-living Vigleik Storaas Trio teamed up with a four-piece horn section from the top shelf in Scandinavian Jazz today. The septet brings Vigleik’s compositions brilliantly to higher grounds with the elegant blend of small chamber-music-like passages, wall to wall with the bigger sound of the ”almost-big-band-sound” when everyone hits together. Open Ears is an exiting and interesting release, which features Vigleik Storaas’ brilliant piano playing, as well as his challenging writing.
Line up: Vigleik Storaas (piano), Mats Eilertsen (bass), Per Oddvar Johansen (drums), Jukka Perko (alto- & soprano sax), Tore Brunborg (tenor-, soprano sax & flute), Tore Johansen (trumpet & flugelhorn), Øyvind Brække (trombone)

A dream came through for Tore Johansen when the bass legend Steve Swallow arrived at Bodø Airport in the end of May 2009. Along with two of Sweden’s finest jazz musicians, pianist Lars Jansson and drummer Anders Kjellberg, they worked intensively for three days with the I.S. recording as result. The album documents a meeting of three generations of jazz musicians sharing the same melodical focus for compositions and improvisations as well. The album will be released on 8th February 2010 and is recorded at Store Studio, Bodø. (Photo: Helge Grønmo)
